  Eric Horvitz is Principal Researcher and Research Area Manager at Microsoft Research. He pursues research in machine learning and reasoning, search and information retrieval, human-computer interaction, and ecommerce.

He has been interested in people as limited-resource decision makers and has explored computational methods and policies that show promise in their ability to learn to understand people and their information needs. Work in this realm includes methods for triaging information in communications and retrieval settings, probabilistic models of workload, cost-benefit policies for balancing the value of information awareness with disruption, studies of task interruption and recovery, and principles of mixed-initiative interaction.

Eric is President-elect and Fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). He has served as Chair of the Association for Uncertainty and Artificial Intelligence (AUAI), on the DARPA Information Science and Technology (ISAT) Study Group, and the Naval Research Advisory Committee (NRAC). He is Associate Editor of the Journal of the ACM, where he oversees the Decisions, Uncertainty, and Computation area. He received PhD and MD degrees at Stanford University.
